Jelle’s Marble Runs: Creativity with purpose

We love discovering new ideas and possibilities, and when we see other companies and initiatives being creative, it puts a smile on our faces.

Just in case the word ‘corona’ makes you want to click on ‘close window’, please don’t. This will be interesting, I promise. I would like to discuss sports in times of corona. I don’t mean the countless YouTube videos about cancelled matches, I mean a very specific corona-proof sport that has become an increasingly hot topic, namely marble racing.

‘Marble racing? What on earth is that?’

Now, I can hear you thinking: ‘Marble racing? What on earth is that?’ How lovely of you to ask. Marble racing brings playing with marbles to a whole new level. Or maybe even a level that would be new to that new level (it’s that good). You can’t even really compare it to the marble games we played as children, besides the fact that marbles play a crucial role in this exhilarating sport. Again, I can hear you thinking: ‘Playing marbles? Exhilarating?’ Hell yes! Just think of the Formula One, but with marbles. Max Verstappen eat your heart out, because trust me, this is at least as fun as auto racing, and it’s a whole lot more eco-friendly.

more addictive than Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough Ice Cream

Currently, the major players in the world of marble racing are Jelle and Dion Bakker, which you may know from their YouTube channel Jelle’s Marble Runs. These brothers from Nijmegen construct competitive marble races and then upload videos that may possibly be even more addictive than Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough Ice Cream. Their videos are bursting with creativity and there isn’t much this duo isn’t willing to do. Had I mentioned that Jelle and Dion’s videos have millions of views? And that the individual athletes (aka marbles) all have their own fanbase? Or that the YouTube channel was mentioned in the American show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver? Or that that same John Oliver was so incredibly excited about Jelle’s Marble Runs that he is now their main sponsor? How cool is that?

It puts a smile on our faces

The fact that we’re all mildly addicted to the videos by now isn’t the only reason we believe Jelle and Dion’s work should be highlighted: we also want to support creative initiatives such as Jelle’s Marble Runs. We love discovering new ideas and possibilities, and when we see other companies and initiatives being creative, it puts a smile on our faces. And in our opinion, Jelle and Dion deserve additional praise for managing to provide an entertaining alternative to the cancelled matches.
