With Great Power for Translators without Borders

This years fundraiser will take place at GALA 2020 in San Diego. Since San Diego is the home of Comic Con, we have decided to engage our inner nerds and geeks and go full bore for a comic themed fundraiser. The fundraiser was named “With Great Power for TWB” because ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. At Ludejo we feel great responsibility for the wellbeing of, and name recognition of, Translators without Borders. We all have great power, but especially those of us in the localization industry. We need to use our position of influence to help TWB. What they do is too important.

Why do we feel the need to support TWB?

People have asked me (Andrew) over the last few years, “why do you support Translators without Borders?”, and I’ve always struggled to give a coherent answer. My responses have generally been some combination of puzzlement and a rhetorical “why wouldn’t I?!”.

Over time, I’ve given the question more consideration, and the more I’ve thought about it, the better I’ve been able to formulate an answer:

It makes sense to me.

That’s it really.

It just makes sense to me.

It makes sense to me as a part of Ludejo

It makes sense to me as a member of the localization industry.

It makes sense to me on a basic human level.

It just makes sense!

Our mission statement at Ludejo is:

“The transfer of information and knowledge so that it can be available to, and understood by, everyone regardless of location, language field, educational level, and culture.”

Every human being should have access to information, especially in times of disaster or emergency, in a language they understand. I cannot begin to imagine the intense horror of finding myself in a situation where my words no longer have meaning, and my ears can no longer decipher others speech. And that is before I start to think about the earth-shattering reasons that have led to my world falling apart. Translators without Borders just makes sense.
